Personal Building Biology Mission Statement

Daryl Reeves, founder of Building Biology Australia, 1999

Upon my return to Australia at the beginning of 1999 I set up Building Biology Australia as the name from which I would work to spread the news about Building Biology. As part of my determination to see Building Biology concepts being used in the design and construction of new and remodelled buildings, and in line with my desire to assist people who had become affected by the buildings they lived and worked in, I set out my personal aims.

These are included here as my Personal Building Biology Mission Statement.

  1. I will see a house and its furnishings as well as housing development in general, before anything else, as a building organism.
  1. I will adopt a holistic viewpoint with regard to the relationship between the occupants and their living environment - seeing not the individual parts as much as seeing the whole connectedness of the parts.
  1. I will put the occupants' wellbeing, health and dignity - their basic human needs - as the fundamentals of building and habitation, and recognise them as my social and professional responsibility.
  1. I will use my knowledge of Building Biology, which is biologically and culturally orientated, in a practical way to promote biologically sound building, living and housing development.
  1. I will assess building materials and advise on planning, furnishings and/or renovating buildings and workplaces according to Building Biology principles.
  1. I will advise on the creation and use of the living environment in such a way that it will help serve both the prevention of and the healing of illness.
  1. I will provide Building Biology consulting and supervision, and give advise on matters pertaining to Building Biology.
  1. I see my job as that of helping to reconcile the needs of people and their environments as reflected in our buildings, housing developments and styles of living.
